Our Commitment to Sustainability
Our belief in sustainability is rooted in our commitment to excellence and the notion that we can always do better.
Whether choosing to go cupless to reduce paper waste, recycling trash at the start/finish area or being thoughtful about what kind of finisher awards we offer, we’ve strived to make improvements to our event every year since Waldo 100k was founded in 2002.
We share the Council For Responsible Sport‘s commitment to managing the social and environmental impacts of our event. And this year, we are pleased to be one of the first races to participate in Ultrasignup’s Trail to Zero™ program. A recent statistic from 29 mass participation events in North America between 2014 and 2019 indicates that 98.5% of an event’s carbon footprint came from event-related travel by participants. When you register for the lottery you will have the option to contribute one dollar (or more) to the Trail to Zero™ carbon offset program to help account for your travel and support an impactful climate-action project. Another new addition this year will be the launch of a new food composting program and other improvements to our aid station management, including a new Most Sustainable Aid Station Award that incentivizes our volunteers to do even more to lessen our impact.
Overall, we believe our race is a net positive, but we recognize that we need to do more to protect the beautiful places we live and play so that future generations can enjoy the trails as much as we do.
